ALZHEIMERS NEWS-LIFESTYLE MAKES A DIFFERENCE
yesterday i wrote about the mind diet and how it was important in brain health
i recently read this interview from being patient linked here with a researcher who was studying an indigenous group in bolivia called the tsimane
they live in the amazon basin
this group has one of the lowest rates of brain and heart disease ever recorded
an aside if you are in the alzheimers world sign up to receive being patients newsletter
its an excellent source of whats happening in the alzheimers world
the tsimane live isolated from industrialized society
they are around no pollution
they exercise a lot every day gettting around 18-27 thousand steps a day
i average around 5-7 thousand a day
they eat mainly fruits vegetables lots of fiber and fish and lean game meats
they eat no processed meats or foods
they eat off the land
researchers looked at ct scans of the brain blood pressure total cholesterol and other health parameters
they also checked their apoe levels
what they found was that the brains for these folks ranging in age from 40 to 94
was that their brains looked so much younger
eg my brain ct scan shows aging like white matter hyperintensities and some other mild brain changes
they also found the apoe2 apoe3 apoe4 levels were the same as elsewhere in the world
these people though didnt seem to get alzheimers disease
they have the lowest rate in the world
so
we have a lesson to learn from this indigenous tribe the tsimane
the bottom line
the brain functions optimally with the right amount and kinds of food and the right amount of exercise
the tsimane are doing it right
we dont
so
our brains suffer
theirs dont
eat right exercise avoid pollution
is it that simple to slow down alzheimers in a society
probably
