COVID 19-LETS BE READY FOR THE FALL
how worried should we be
not as worried as this time in 2020 or 2021
today
it seems
folks who are getting hospitalized are usually in these three categories
unvaxxed folks even younger folks
unboosted folks over 65
immunocompromised folks like cancer patients older folks transplant patients obese patients those with lung disease those with chronic health problems those with connective tissue disease etc
the rest of us are faring pretty well if we catch the covid right now
but remember
there are still around 300+ folks a day dying in the us from covid
i have said and ive heard folks say
i just dont want to get sick and be in bed for days
then
miss work miss vacations lose daycare services get vulnerable family and friends sick
just like with the flu i dont want to catch covid and be sick from both
remember im quadravaxxed ie two shots and two boosters
i still can catch it but will likely only have a milder case but if i do get it ill seek out the covid pill paxlovid to take since im in a high risk category
it has to be taken in the first few days of the illness to be effective
if i get sick i plan to use one of my test kits to make the diagnosis then ill seek out a prescription for the paxlovid
i also will seek out whatever covid shot is available this fall
there is a debate about which will be offered
will it cover the now dominant ba.5 or will it just cover the omicron
we need ba.5 coverage
also there is a new subvariant of the ba.5 thats more contagious and may cause more lower respiratory illness
its spreading in india and will likely be here this fall and may take over
in younger folks they are faring ok if infected although im sure this winter there will be a lot of admissions for bronchiolitis and upper respiratory illness from covid and other winter viral respiratory infections
here in santa barbara county we have had 6 deaths in the last week from covid
hospitalizations are up
below is the graph from the santa barbara public health of the covid hospitalizations and covid icu admissions since covid started
it seems each year the graph is looking the same
it appears this years summer graph is mimicking the last two summers
its expected the winter graph will look the same also
the difference will be there may be less hospitalizations
and
hopefully less deaths
so be prepared
since our level is high in this area now
ill wear a mask inside
ill avoid large gatherings
ill get my flu shot and the fall covid shot when its available
if i get sick ill test myself and since im high risk ill seek out a paxlovid prescription
thats as much as i can do to keep from getting covid and spreading it around
im doing most of the things i was doing before covid hit us in 2019
luckily
we live where the weather is nice most of the year so we can do almost everything outdoors
remember covid although its not as virulent now its much more contagious as will be the new one that comes through this winter
be safe
try not to get sick
