the national institute of health or nih made a video titled 

how alzheimers changes the brain

when i was diagnosed in 2010 i vaguely knew some of this stuff 
but 
not nearly as well as i do now

eg 
i read 10 articles on alzheimers disease this morning
i receive updates from several alzheimers blogs and several alzheimers research centers newsletters and several alzheimers forum websites and the nih  and the national institute on aging to name a few 
so
over this last 12 years i have learned a lot about alzheimers disease
i can easily discuss the disease with some of my medical providers
commonly i know as much or more about it then they do

it helps to know the terminology of alzheimers disease
words like
amyloid or plaques or tau or tau tangles or astrocytes or microglia or inflammation or glucose metabolism in the brain or hippocampus or vascular symptoms
knowing what those words mean in relation to alzheimers disease helps understand the disease

when you have it or your loved one has it the more you know about the disease the easier it is too deal with it


as you watch this video from the nih you will see all those words i listed above
in research there are drugs being developed to attack each of these words

eg
my drug aduhelm or aducanumab is a monoclonal antibody that attaches to the amyloid in the plaques and removes the plaques from the brain

there are several drugs similar to my aduhelm that do the same thing 
there are drugs that attack the tau tangles and remove them
there are drugs that stimulate the microglia and astrocytes to clean up the inflammation that occurs in the brain with alzheimers 
there are drugs that improve the vascular supply to the brain
there are drugs increase the glucose to the nerve cells

these drug are here now and if successful will start being available over the next 1-5 years

i envision a time when you can take a antiamyloid drug and an antitau drug and an antiinflammatory drug and a glucose enhancement drug and a drug to improve your vascular supply to the brain cells

do this and it may prevent alzheimers disease from spreading or even starting to developing

like when a diabetic takes one or two diabetes drugs and a blood pressure drug and a cholesterol drug and maybe insulin to control their dibetes and to slow down effects of the diabetes on the body

we are now on at the beginning of all of this treatment of alzheimers disease
