MY STORY REVISITED #64-OUR FIRST WALK TO END ALZHEIMERS
9 years ago we did our first walk to end alzheimers in austin texas
our walk team was composed of family and friends and clinic employees and former patients and others who walked with us
my wife she and i picked the alzheimers walks to be one of the volunteer opportunities that we would support with our volunteering and financial support
that first walk was successful
we had a large group and were the largest team and raised the most money of any individual team that year in the austin walk to end alzheimers
at this point
i was a year into the adni2 study the alzheimers disease neuroimaging study
i was on aricept now for about a year
i hadnt had my spinal tap yet or my amyvid pet scan that eventually solidified my diagnosis
i was staying busy working at the country n and hiking and doing a lot of volunteer work
i want to thank
those of you that have walked with me at all of these walks
those who have given us emotional support
those who have done generous financial support
then
i want to honor these family members affected by this disease when they died
my mother nell
a former nurse
my younger brother joe
a retired fireman and a retired deputy sheriff
my father charles
a retired minister
each morning of the walk i awake early sit in my sitting spot by myself sometimes with the lights off to pause and think of each of them
and
yes i shed some tears
then
i get dressed in my alzhiemers walk shirt and walk to help end azheimers disease
now this year the walks are all going virtual
so
at 900am this weekend i will watch the virtual walk ceremony
then
out the door my wife she and i will go to walk up to the beautiful grounds of the santa barbara mission where the promise garden will be with its alzheimers flowers spinning in the breeze
you can join us and walk where you live
you can also donate to our team the organicgreendoctor team at this link
or
you can find your local alzheimers walk to get involved
im doing my part to help find a cure for this disease
