the two pictures above are part of what i call my tomato jungle
i started planning my garden last winter and planned to do only 6 tomatoes this time
however
i always say that
i always plant too many for my garden plot
this year i planted early girl celebrity sun gold cherokee purple black krim and two tomatoes i saved seeds from last year
one was a small tomato that just popped up in my garden last year and was real productive
its a small tomato that looks like a cross between a juliette and a san marzano
so far this year it has lots of tomatoes that havent ripened
the other tomato is a larger small tomato i got from my sisterinlaw where the tomato just popped up in her shrub bed and grew for two years producing hundreds of tomatoes
so far the three plants i planted of this one are loaded with lots of green tomatoes
i cage my tomatoes with a five foot wire cage then allow the vines to grow over the top
the problem is that the vines are probably 3 ft long growing out fo the top of the cages
so when i look down the row it does look like a jungle
these tomatoes are all most likely indeterminates so they will just grow and grow
so
i have had to tie the vines up as much as possible then trim a path between them so i can access the tomatoes when they ripen
one cage fell over with a large wind we had
i finally just left it like it fell to see how it grows
as i sit her today i promise to only plant 6 plants of tomatoes next year
and
i promise to space them further apart to give me better access to them
i know i know i probably said this last year
if i was in texas my tomatoes would be at the end of the season
here its just starting up
here is my tatume squash i planted this year
it grows in a vine and if you pick it when its softball size you can use it like a zucchini squash
or
you can let it grow larger and use it like a winter squash
we use ours when they are smaller
this squash is resistant to the vine borer which we dont seem to have a problem with here
so
i see lots of ripe tomatoes in our future
last year i think i got tomato poisoning from eating so many of them fresh
we will freeze some of them
eat a lot of them
give away some
donate some to the food banks
doing this makes it all worth while
