AZHEIMERS NEWS-YOU ONLY HAVE 32 OF THEM
this fall i listened to a lecture from a neurologist and researcher from ucla give a presentation on an update on alzheimers disease
on one of her slides she had a list of 18 things that are risk factors and contributors to alzheimes disease
they are
aging
the environment
social interactions
mental health
sleep
education brain resilience
innate immunity
inflammatory pathways
hormonal regulations
oral health
gut microbiome
pathogens toxins
smoking
vascular health like blood pressure cholesterol diabetes
diet
exercise
genetics
dr dale bredesen in his reversal of cognitive decline article spelled out 36 things to look at that may affect your cognitive decline
all of the ones in the list above was on his list
one of the things on the list is oral health
it seems the inflammation and infection that can occur in our teeth and gums can get transferred to the brain
this inflammatory process may contribute to the inflammation that occurs in the brain in alzheimers
inflammation causes the body to send in the troops to attack that inflammation
this battle that ensues can cause more brain cell destruction
also a germ found in the gums called p. gingivalis which may be passed to the brain or as in a recent study may induce compounds that contribute to the development of alzheimers
this inflammation and infection may be one of the spokes on the alzheimers disease wheel
dr bredesen recommends good oral health
if you look at the list of things that are in the neurologists lecture you will see that many of them are things that you and i can fix or control
oral health is one of them
i have tried to be good since i was diagnosed 9 years ago about taking care of my teeth
but
since moving i fell off the wagon and didnt get regular dental cleaning and evaluations of my teeth
one of my new years resolutions was to restart it
so
i did
oh my
one crown down and one root canal down with two more crowns to go
as i await that needle injection to happen and await all that grinding and noise that gets made and my head bouncing up and down while they do their dental procedures
i think
its all about inflammation and infection
i dont want any part of anything i can control on one of those spokes of the alzheimers wheel to be broken
i want all of them intact helping to keep this disease at bay
brush your teeth
floss every day
get regular dental cleaning and dental checkups
your brain and your memory may depend on it
