ALZHEIMERS NEWS-CHOLINE STOPS THE TRASH TRUCK GUYS
the trash truck guys that get in the brain to clean up debris while you sleep are microglia
if you dont get enough sleep each night these guys cant clean out all the garbage in the brain
it accumulates and starts to cause damage to the brain cells
think
a garbage strike in a big city
if you have ever been around when there is one you know what im talking about
too little microglia is bad
too much microglia is maybe worse
too little microglia allows amyloid and tau to accumulate in the brain
too much microglia also leads to more damage to the brain cells
its the mark of inflammation in the brain that is part of the alzheimers disesase process
now enter choline
its found in our diet
in meat eggs some veggies pasta rice fish spinach beets wheat to name a few sources
so i know looking at that list i get choline in my diet
but
i also add choline as a supplement
in the regimen im am on from dr bredesens reversal of cognitive decline it is one of the supplements that may be beneficial
many of his recommendations have been proven to slow down the disease
like
control your blood pressure control your cholesterol control your weight exercise eat a healthy diet
but
some are not 100% proven to help
many of them are based on animal studies
like
this one described in the article linked here
choline is used two ways in the body
its used to make acetylcholine which is a neurotransmitter in the nerve endings that make the nerves fire and work
i see the effects of acetylcholine every day
i feel the effects of acetylcholine every day
as i cross my legs and watch the muscles in my calves fire and twitch without my control
all day long
sometimes they will cramp
a get you out of bed cramp
the drug aricept (donepezil) i take to slow down the alzheimers disease symptoms is called an acetycholinesterase inhibitor
it inhibits the production of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase which keeps the body from breaking down the acetylcholine so more is available to the nerve endings
my calves twitch because of this effect
my calves nerve endings have more acetylcholine available to them
it also provides more for my brain cells
plus
i take the choline which may help increase the amount of acetylcholine available
plus
the choline inhibits or slows down the overwork the microglia is doing in the brain which if left unchecked leads to faster brain cell death
ie alzheimers disease
in the study mentioned above they used mice who have the gene for alzheimers disease so they all get alzheimers
those fed choline supplements .had improved memory compared to those who didnt get extra choline
does it prove we need to be taking this
no
but
it implies it might help
so
now the human research needs to be done
but that is a long long study that is expensive
sadly it probably will not ever get done
so
will the choline help
i dont know
it might and it might not
i for now like the mice have opted to take it since its on the protocol and it might help
it does seem though that its a lifetime use of choline that helps
the other option is that we start our kids when they start eating food on a healthy diet like the mind diet or mediterranean diet
they should be getting adequate choline that way
sometimes when i wake up from a deep deep sleep
i listen real close
since its so quiet at 4 am
i can hear those trash truck guys working up in my brain
so
i try to lay my head down and ease back to sleep
so
they can finish their job
i will be on an alzheimers panel at the valley presbyterian hospital in van nuys california on thursday october 10 2019
i will on the panel that day with other people diagnosed with alzheimers
each person present with their spouse will represent different stages of the disease
what do we think about all this is what we want those in the audience to hear
here is the link to the conference
our santa barbara walk to end alzheimers is on saturday november 2, 2018
here is the link to my team and the walk site
click and donate and or join us
or

the organicgreen doctor
welcome to the organic green doctor blog
i am a family physician who was diagnosed with
early mild cognitive impairment(mci) amnestic type on december 21, 2010
this is a precursor to alzheimers disease
because of this diagnosis i have opted to stop practicing medicine
this blog will be about my journey with this disease
please feel free to follow me along this path
i will continue blogging on organic gardening, green living,
solar power, rainwater collection, and healthy living
i will blog on these plus other things noted to be interesting
