SANTA BARBARA COUNTRY N NEWS-AN EGG TEST
when we lived in texas we had around 12 chickens plus or minus based on how nature felt about the chickens
we usually always had fresh eggs
we got
white ones
brown ones
blue ones
our chickens were free range organic
what that means they got to commonly have the run of our 10 acres moving from their coop out into the pastures and also around my garden compost pile of leaves and green stuff from trimmings mowing etc
they ate all natural stuff
they ate a lot of bugs and seeds
they were quite adapt at catching and eating grasshoppers
so i usually had a fairly fresh egg every morning for breakfast once we got our chickens
i have continued to do so since moving here
now these chickens they liked to hide eggs not always laying them in the right place like the 6 nesting boxes we provided
they had two boxes that was their favs and mostly ignored the others
occasionally we would find a pile of them tucked behind something
we never really knew how old these eggs were
so
we would do the float test
you take a glass of water
drop the egg in
if it floats dont eat it
if it sinks it should be good
the egg above was from lilys eggs at our local farmers market
they have the best eggs
the egg sunk quickly to the bottom of the glass
i took it out this morning
cracked it on the side of my dish
one thing ive noticed besides the fact these fresh eggs have such great flavor
is
when you crack them the egg shell is hard
it takes 2-3 whacks to crack them
while
the old store white ones just takes a gentle tap
recently
when i got on a cost saving while shopping phase
its a game i play
eat real well but see how much less money you can spend doing it
so
i brought these old white standard grocery store eggs
they probably have been stored somewhere for weeks or maybe months
and
probably were layed in these big on chicken houses with the chickens all in a row
all being egg laying machines
again what i noticed besides the eggs tasting like cooked cardboard
is
that the egg shell is easy to crack
the brown free range organic eggs are much more tougher
im sure my worms in my worm buckets will like these brown lilys egg shells
also
the free range organic eggs are obviously heavier as you lift the 12 egg cartons
while
the white cardboard tasting ones are light
well like they have 12 cardboard eggs in them
what i decided is
some things are just worth paying more money for
like
eggs
and
of course coffee
this last week in the plot next to mine in the community garden i glanced over and saw this beautiful artichoke flower
i think its one of the prettiest flowers
the bees think so too
