HEY YOU ARE GOING THE WRONG WAY
we had friends visiting from out of state who went to a butterfly garden display in san diego
there was butterflies everywhere of all kinds
especially monarchs
we were shown several butterfly pictures especially monarchs
so
i said
you know if they release them they wont know where to go
they wont go south down to mexico where they are suppose to stay for the winter
if they go north well that dont end well when winter comes
like
what happened in the book i read called flight behavior by barbara kingsolver
where the monarchs didnt go south like they were suppose to and many of them didnt make it
what are you talking about they said
well i said according to this research study if you raise butterflies in captivity like some folks do at schools and at home and release them
well
it seems they all go willy nilly in different directions
they all need to go south
for the winter
thats their life cycle
to end up way down south
it seems some have different genes that are raised and sold commercially but even those with all the regular genes they lose that sense of direction
sort of
the way i thought of it
when my wife she drives
if she doesnt have her gps maps on her phone
well
just like the monarchs she can drive willy nilly to where she goes
trust me
eg
once when driving across country i let her drive after a pit stop
i instantly fell asleep before she took off
as i woke about two hours later
where we at
i dont know
so i using my map
now this was pre gps times
i figured she had gone the wrong way 100 miles the wrong way
so
now
ill call her
my monarch butterfly
so it seems these home grown monarchs dont know which way to go
unless
they are left outside to hatch and grow through their various stages
then
off they go headed down south
monarchs in hawaii and australia and central america and south america and africa dont have to migrate
but
those in north america have to go south
or
they wil end up like those in the book mentioned above
lesson
raise them outside or they may be doomed to be willy nilly butterflies
like my wife she
