WE HAVE ONLY ONE EARTH DAY
if you take the time and look around your property and around your neighborhood and at your kids schools and at the parks
look for these three things
worms in the ground
dig up some dirt do you find any
look around to see if any butterflies ever flutter around where you live
look for bees buzzing and collecting nectar and pollen
if you dont see any
well
if that happens to all of us then we on this earth are in deep deep trouble
i read today that 40% of the insect population is disappearing
as goes the insects goes our earth
remember these three invertebrates bees worms and butterflies are a measure to follow
on how this world is doing
so in my world at the texas country n i could control what happened on my 10 acres that we lived on
there
if you dug in the garden and the soil you would find earthworms
why
i put them there and didnt use any insecticides pesticides or other antiinsect sprays
i used only organic stuff
you would find butterflies freely fluttering around our property
all kinds of butterflies
why
i didnt use all those bad sprays and chemical stuff
plus
i planted a ton of native wildflowers and native plants that flowered
the butterflies stayed quite happy
the fondest memory of butterflies was one year our yard was covered with this mix of wildflowers
that was covered with hundreds of butterflies
then we had a purple martin house nearby
the purple martins would fly high in the sky like a jet plane then dive down in a swoooooping movement to snatch some of the butterflies from the air
this went on for a long long time
they couldve eaten all the butterflies but they didnt
plenty of the butterflies survived to keep their species going
thats the balance of nature
the yin and yang of nature
then
i added bees
now i had plenty of bees to begin with but when i added this hive they got even more plentiful
as long as we lived there we kept an overabundance of bees
where we lived was surrounded by acres and acres of pastureland that was mostly left alone
so
no harmful stuff was sprayed or spread over the area
now
if i was surrounded by corn fields or soybeans or some other vegetable crop not grown organically
i probably wouldnt have any
bees
butterflies
earthworms
now to earth day
earth day got its start here in santa barbara after the massive oil spill that nearly destroyed the economy here and the beaches
they have a sensitivity to taking care of our earth
theirs almost got destroyed by us humans
they have a two day celebration each year
the last two years we have been here we have been out of town for that celebration
but
next year we have promised each other thats my wife she and i to be here that weekend
like us
we all should celebrate earth day
we only have one
we are not taking good care of it very well
stop today
take a look in you garden beds and in your yard
do you see bees
do you see butterflies
do you see earthworms
if not
well
you are in trouble
ask yourself why
it wont be a good reason
for you and your family
