ALZHEIMERS NEWS-THESE 4 MAY HELP
a couple of weeks ago i watched this video of a well known alzheimers researcher explaining how alzheimers starts and develops to cause brain cell damage which leads to what we see in our family and friends who develop this disease
first for some reason the body deposits beta amyloid in the brain
this happens years before symptoms start
next
the tau protein in the nerve cells are damaged and unravel
causing brain cells damage
next
the body has an inflammatory response to this damage
which finishes off these brain cells
inflammatory diseases are like rheumatoid arthritis uclerative colitis crohns disease lupus to name a few
if youve ever stuck a thorn in you skin that remained under the skin
the redness swelling tenderness that forms
thats an inflammatory reaction
this reaction happens in the brain with alzheimers
the result of all this
alzheimers disease
he suggests attacking the disease at each step
step one
amyloid accumulating in the brain
this one really needs to be done long before symptoms are started
this is where we are headed with our treatments
this article suggests you could lower alzheimers risk by 70% if we did these things
dont smoke
keep body weight below bmi of 25 over 25 is obesity
eating fish twice a week
eating fruits and vegetables 3 times a day
keep blood pressure under 120/80
keep blood sugar under 100
keep cholesterol under 200
remember as you do these you are also preventing heart disease and stroke
there are now 4 drugs using immunotherapy to remove the amyloid plaques from the brain
all of them are in the research stage
so you use the healthy living things above to help prevent the amyloid to be deposited in the brain
these immunotherapies are given if the amyloid is present
this amyloid deposits starts years before symptoms starts
these 4 drugs are
aducanumab thats my drug that i am on and start the no placebo arm of the study in a month
ban2401 made by biogen the same company that does mine
gantenerumab
lillys ly3002813
these seem to be working with the results being officially out in 2+ years
there are several others in the works that work similarly and seem to be working
there are other drugs that prevent the amyloid from forming
these are also in the research stage
then
if the tau destruction has started
there are drugs in studies that attach to the damaged tau to remove it
so they work on this 2nd stage
then
to fight the inflammatory reaction
there are drugs and supplements that have antiinflammatory effects
turmeric acid
omega 3 fish oil
vitamin e
cbd oil from marijuana and hemp
an old antiinflammatory drugs used for arthritis and pain called ponstel or mefenemic acid
its available now as a prescription
long term studies are being done to see if it helps
experimental drugs that are in studies that attack this inflammation
im taking the turmeric and omega 3 and vitamin e
the cbd oil gives me severe dreadful horrible nightmares so i discontinued it
if i could get my hands on the ponstel i would take it
so the treatment for alzheimers disease in the future is three pronged
amyloid prevent it from forming and remove it if it does form
doing this prevents number 2 and 3
remove tau if it has formed
fight the inflammatory reaction that occurs when the amyloid and tau does its destruction
if you get too far along with this disease
sadly
well
none of this does much good
so
start now
to prevent it in you and your family
the organicgreen doctor
welcome to the organic green doctor blog
i am a family physician who was diagnosed with
early mild cognitive impairment(mci) amnestic type on december 21, 2010
this is a precursor to alzheimers disease
because of this diagnosis i have opted to stop practicing medicine
this blog will be about my journey with this disease
please feel free to follow me along this path
i will continue blogging on organic gardening, green living,
solar power, rainwater collection, and healthy living
i will blog on these plus other things noted to be interesting
