COUNTRY N NEWS-ITS SO DRY HERE
i posted this picture below recently
showing my work boot beside a large crack
in the ground in my front pasture
this was taken well over a month ago
so im sure this fissure has enlarged
you know my wife she went hiking on that trail
last night and didnt return
hope she didnt fall in
id better go check this morning
im sure theres no cellphone reception down there
i have this reoccurring dream that our property
sits over a large cave
im wondering if its true
since when it rains
i never see water running down our yard
and
never even with the 10 inches we got in a few hours
a few years ago
did i see any standing water
im sure when we do get rain that all these cracks
are like big ole straws
just sucking the water down into that big ole cave
i dont think it was this dry here when the drought
was at its worse
it sad since you go the few miles south of here
and
they have got tons of water
this week i had to move rainwater around so i
could have enough water to keep things irrigated
that needed water
like i did during the drought i have had to make
decisions on what plants to water and what plants
to just let go
a natural death
it seems so strange to be in this situation since we had
so much rain this spring
then it just stopped raining
i mean we got no rain now for over 3 months
plus
i accidentally left open a valve
again
emptying more than one big tank
so i usually have 24,000 gallons for the house
now we have 4,200
so before you come visit be sure and bring your
own water and go to the restroom before you leave
your house
if we were to go another month without rain
we would have to buy water
its hard to believe this is happening again
then we are down to 2,600 gallons of water out
of 6,000+ total irrigation capacity
this all gives me a lot of respect for those
pioneers who had no backup resources
for food and water
we are lucky to live now instead of back then
although relying on rainwater like we do
and
using our garden some as a food source
somehow gives us this bond
this pioneer spirit
with how they use to live
so i have let all my garden go except for my
tomatoes and peppers
they are real green and growing well
using new irrigation practices learned this last year
at a water saving seminar
i am delaying the planting of my fall garden for a
few weeks until we get rain
so for someone who relies on rainwater as their water
source
we are at a low point
dancing for rain
squeezing each drop of moisture we can from anywhere
but
not really feeling nervous about it
since we are just a phone call away from filling our tanks
and
one thunderstorm away from filling them up again
