GADGETRY
ed begley is my hero
i use to love to watch his show on tv about his green living
it was a reality show on green living
before reality shows were popular
heck he even rode his stationary bike every morning
since it was hooked to a generator which ran
the electricity to his toaster to
toast his bread for breakfast
definitely my type of guy
a good friend says i look like him
and
of course
i definitely think like him
this last two weeks ive had ed begley days every day
since
we doubled our solar capacity
added an ac heating system
added new energy efficient windows
its almost orgasmic as i look at my energy use each day
on the internet
66% reduction in our electric use from our power company
so in that frame of mine
looking for new ideas
we went to a friends house this weekend for a dinner party
to see their new home and to get together with a
group of folks from the past
as i got to talk to the husband
lets call him jordan
he got to talk about the gadgetry on his phone
he has all this control stuff programmed in his phone
i told him about my brother who controls his thermostat
his hot water heater etc from his iphone
when his wife leaves the house
he turns up the thermostat on the ac
and
turns down the water heater
reversing it just before she arrives home
he has a tracking device on her iphone
since she is always leaving it somewhere
like bathrooms stores gas stations restaurants etc etc
but
jordan man he has gone a step farther
probably so high up the ladder he is
in ed begley heaven
ok after a glass of wine or two his wife started opening up
on her view of this begleyness
so she said when i go to the bathroom
the light clicks on
when i leave after a time the light shuts it off
however
if im having a good one sitting for awhile
the lights go off
so i have to wave my arms wildly to get the lights on
disrupting my moment of zen
then
in the morning she likes to watch tv in her bathroom
as she gets ready for work
however that is all programmed to come on and off
she cant figure how to turn it off and on
she said
i just want to watch tv in the morning
then
once the hot water heater in one side went out
so over by the guest room theres another one
however its programmed to come on and go off at
a certain time
so
her and the kids had to take a cold shower that morning
until she located him to turn on the guest water heater
using his iphone from work
then
she likes to sit and watch her tv shows
under her ceiling fan
but sometimes the fan is too high
and needs to be turned down
so
she huddles under a blanket
until she can locate jordan to turn the fan down
since she cant figure out how to do it
if you walk into a room the fan and light comes on
leave the room and it goes off
50+ points of control he has to save energy
with the below example
the ultimate
down by the creek below the property line
the frogs start croaking at night
they get louder and louder
easily heard sitting on the back deck
so loud it interferes with conversations
click on the iphone
a blue light turns on down by the creek
the frogs get real quiet
for awhile at least
now this is the ultimate in energy control of a house
all programmable
especially for someone who likes to be in total control
like me
so i sat here this morning
thinking about how i could use this technology in our house
so i decided
as much as i liked all that gadgetry
and
as much as i like ed begley
it all does have its limits
its called a marriage
so
ill just stop while im ahead
on begleyizing the country n
