HABITAT LANDSCAPE
this last year ive taken over the landscaping for each habitat
for humanity house that we build
it is one area that had been ignored in the past after the
house was finished
partly because of the lack of money left over for landscaping
at the end because sometimes when building you run into things
that require a lot of extra expense that is unexpected so
its important to do the best job on building the house
the landscape gets whats leftover
and again
sometimes thats nothing

since i have an interest in landscaping and gardening
i became involved knowing that it wouldnt get done exactly
the way i would do it at home but
within the confines of the budget i decided to do the best we could

for each 400 square feet of grass i replace with a mulched area or
a rock area i save between $30-$50 which then can be used on
something else in the landscape to get rid of more grass or to
buy more shrubs or more soil for garden or flower beds

each square foot of area that we can get rid of grass will save the
owner from watering and fertilizing and caring for it

we also have individuals and landscape companies and some
nurseries who have given us plants and supplies that have helped a lot

remember these areas without grass are pretty much maintenance free

if you have mulch left over let me know i want it

this is in an area called blackland prairie where a lot of farming like
right now corn is done
in fact we joked we should just plant the yard with corn and it
would look good

here is the front of the house
these houses are simple designs but are well constructed
and have an efficient layout

here is a front view of the house where we laid sod and near

the road where the mailbox was we laid black plastic then

covered it with rocks from the job site and from a landscape

company who sometimes donates or gives them to us 

at a reduced price

here is the rock in place so the land owner will not have to 

weedeat or mow this area or water it or fertilize it

here is my wife she in a moment of rest

she is such a trooper this summer helping me out 

while im injured

this area was covered with black plastic then in the center

of it a spineless cactus that will eventually be 6ft 

in diameter is planted

then to the left and right of her a autumn sage or 

salvia greggii will be planted and allowed to

just grow 

the area around the cactus is covered with rock 

that matches that by the mailbox

then this area is covered with a 4 inch deep 

native hardwood mulch

this will be a totally maintenance free area

                                         a live oak is planted at the edge and over time will
                                         provide shade for the front of the house
                                         so this area will not require much after the live oak
                                         is established in about three years
                                       

 

the happy homeowner will assume the house this week

                                         he has put in over 400 hours of work
                                         on this house
                                         i think this is why i like habitat so much
                                         because they
                                         have to work for this and pay something
                                         back over time
                                         its not just given to them
                                         something i wish we could incorporate into a
                                         lot of government plans

                                         then the best part was this walking stick
                                         which i was allowed to bring home and
                                         let him lose on my property

                                         no he didnt spit in my eye

i like tebow because he stands up for what he believes in
in this case its his religious beliefs
others who believe like he does dont

he respects other peoples beliefs and really doesnt try to shove
himself on others
he is just open and honest with the way he shows it

i respect him for that

he also is a winner as hes shown on the football field
he has it
not every athlete has it
lebron does michael did magic did tom brady does peyton does
so does tebow

now the one organization and coach and probably starting
quarterback who could not feel threatened have signed
tebow to play
tebow cant throw the football accurately so dont ask him
to do that
but use him and use his skills
and make him a threat

yep that belichick he knows what he is doing
let the mumbling begin
i cant wait for the season to start to see how they use him
quarterback fullback tight end blocker punt team
cant wait
