NASHVILLE
when i was growing up in rural arkansas we were like
every other teenager we liked the music that was popular
at the time
that that was on the saturday music shows like dick clarks
american band stand
beetles janet joplin jimmie hendrix jefferson airplane beach boys
rolling stones bob dylan james brown doors the who just to
name a few
however our neighbor who lived close by loved country
western music and we use to go down to her house and
she would have those country western music shows on
that had the old guys on it
from that i learned to appreciate country western music and even
today when i hear those twangs and old songs i enjoy listening
to them
later i was introduced to willie nelson by my med school friend
from texas
have been a willie fan since then
so even though country western music is not my most favorite
music to listen to i do sometimes listen to certain artist like willie
dolly some of the newer artists heck they almost sound like
rock bands anyway
so this last week as i wrote about yesterday we decided to take
my motherinlaw to nashville to the grand ole opry and the country
music hall of fame and the rynman auditorium
the ryman was an old church that was converted to the original
grand ole opry
the grand ole opry is a mixture of the old time country music
with the new music with the youngest singer in their early 20s
and the oldest singer in the early 90s
all singing on the same stage the night we were there
after a rocky start we made it to nashville
the highlight i think was the hall of fame and museum
especially the historical part of it
the roots of country western was the music from
the appalachian mountains
mixed with southern black music
mixed with southern white church music
and fiddler music
what comes out of all this is country music
during the dust bowls of the 30s a large group of people from
arkansas texas oklahoma loaded up and went to california
and settled in the farming areas
to be an okie then was like being a migrant worker
a second class citizen
being called an okie was a derogatory word
(like it still is in texas especially when the texas oklahoma
football game is about to happen)
the sound that came out of that movement was called
the bakersfield sound which gave us merle haggard wylan
jennings buck owens hehaw
my motherinlaw that was her music
she was one of those arkie okies that moved west in the
dust bowl
that was her sound
so thats why we went and why she enjoyed it so much
