HELPING HAND
'when youve worked hard and done well
and walked through
that doorway of opportunity
you do not slam it shut behind you
you reach back and give other folks
the same chances
that help you succeed'
in high school there was a program to hire students
to work in local hospitals
that was my exposure to medicine that solidified my
desire to be a physician
in junior college i worked full time and went to school
part time
to finish at a four year school i had to work but also
relied on grants both state and federal and on loans
both state and federal in order to finish school
many of those loans and grants are not available
now to students
in medical school i signed up for a program that paid
for part of my school as well as provided a monthly check
for living expenses
this was in exchange for working in an under served area
for each year of support
i also worked part time some under a federal program
that provided part time employment
those programs dont exist now
whenever i can i have tried to help out in some way students
either financially or with encouragement to get them to
continue their education
i tried to reach back and give back
i hope that in future years that we dont slam those doors
on people like i was years ago
i dont think i would have made it if those opportunities
werent there
