ReplyDeleteEnjoy your Thanksgiving and your family.
ReplyDeleteI read your article with interest. Two or three years ago I was diagnosed with early onset dementia, and put on social security disability. No one has ever mentioned any specific diagnosis, or reasons why I have this, or suggested any treatment. I was 52 when diagnosed. Where do I start, what do I do about this? I'm already confused enough as it is, is there not something that I can do?

ReplyDeleteif you havent had a complete workup to rule out other causes you should have it
labs usually done are a complete blood count, a chemistry 20 or similar test to rule out diabetes, electrolyte problems, kidney failure or liver disease, a thyroid test tsh, vitamin b12 level, syphilus test, hiv test
then a new mental status evaluation such a moca test or a thorough neuropsych test
then am mri to rule out other causes of dementia such as stroke, mass, tumors etc
a good screen for depression
a good review of your medical history looking for other causes such as head trauma, stroke, alcohol and drug abuse, family history of dementia, sleep disturbance
if it appears you have alzheimers then most doctors would put you on aricept (donnepezil)
you need to eat a good diet like the mediterannean diet, exercise every day, get adequate sleep, avoid excessive alcohol intake, control your blood pressure and cholesterol, if a diabetic control it, stay active mentally, and to socialize frequently
those are all you can do like its all i can do
to slow down the progression of this disease
but these are all equally important in that process
if you are not getting what you want from your primary doctor go to a neurologist or even better a memory clinic which is found at most universities
im followed by the memory clinic at the university of texas southwestern medical center in dallas
ive had other causes ruled out
ruling out other treatable causes are important
good luck
